Osgood, Judy, ed. Meditations for the Widowed . Gilgal Publications, 1985. Written by thirty-three men and women of all ages who have lost a mate. It offers help for turning hopelessness to hope.

Parachin, Victor M. The Lord Is My Shepherd.: A Psalm for the Grieving. Liguori MO: Liguori Publications, 1992. Excellent brief reflections of encouragement for all kinds of grief experiences.

Pearring, Joanne, ed. When Someone Dies; A Children's Grief Workbook. Mystic Ct: Twenty-third, Publications, 1995. To help children work through the grief process, and to become acquainted with funeral and burial customs.

Pregent, Carol. When a Child Dies. Notre Dame: Ave Maria Press, 1992. Carol’s story of her grief and healing when her seventeen-year-old daughter dies.

Sanford, Doris. It Must Hurt a Lot: A Chad's Book About Death. Portland: Multnomah Press,1986. A child's book that tells of a boy's grief when his dog dies. A teaching tool for parents/adults.

Schiff, Harriet Sarnoff. The Bereaved Parent. New York: Penguin Books, 1978. Speaks to all those who have experienced the death of a child, to let them know they are not alone and that they will be able to live again.

Tangvald, Christine Harder. Someone I Love Died. Elgin: David C. Cook. 1988. Provides a spirituality of death to help parents.

Tatelbaum, Judy. The Courage to Grieve: Creative Living, Recovery, and Growth through Grief. New York: Harper Collins, 1984. Written with sympathy and compassion. Contains many reasonable and logical suggestions for handling with courage, our aching grief over the death of a loved one.

Wolfelt, Alan. Helping Children Cope with Grief. Muncie: Accelerated Development, 1990. Offers tools to help children cope with death.

Wolff, Pierre. May I Hate God? Mahwah: Paulist Press, 1979. Shows how the anger and hatred that separate us from God can become the doorway to greater intimacy with God.

Wolterstorff, Nichols. Lament for a Son. Grand Rapids: Eerdmans, 1987. This is a simple, honest, and poignant expression of one man's grief. It helps open the floodgates for those who cannot articulate their pain.

Tengbom, Mildred. Help for Bereaved Parents. Minneapolis: Bethany House. This booklet sensitively offers concern, help, and suggestions for recovery' from grief to husbands and wives as they support each other in their bereavement, based on the author's own experience.

Westberg, Granger E. Good Grief. PhiIadelphia: Fortress Press, 1971; 21st printing, 1982. A short book to introduce people to the stages of grief.

Zanca, Kenneth J. Mourning: The Healing Journey. Locust Valley: Living Flame Press, 1980. Goes through the grieving process, which includes even anger at God. Shares his experiences that led to eventual peace and faith in God's decision to call his parents home.

Order of Christian Funerals: Study Edition - This Study Edition is a replication of the official text used in the liturgy. It will allow the ministers involved to aquaint themselves with the changes in the rite and its multiple uses.

Handbook for Those Who Grieve by M. Auz and M Lyons Andrews. This practical book has tips for planning funerals, sample sympathy letters, “do” and “don’t” lists, help for grieving children, and a comprehensive list of grief-support resources.

When Hope is Tried by Carol Winters. While living with cancer, Carol Winters kept a journal. This book present brief meditations that depict her movement from anger to trust in God before her death in 2001.

My Life with the Saints by James Martin, SJ. This award winning book is an inspiring memoir of spiritual self-discovery and an homage to the Catholic saints. While this “technically” isn’t a grief book, the inspiration of the saints helps us realize we do not journey alone.

Parenting a Grieving Child by Mary Deturris Poust. This guide for parents help children through the grieving process. Grief-support resources and helpful tips for preparing children for funerals are also included.

Longing For My Child by Christine O’Keefe Lafser. Parents and siblings celebrate the lives of infants, children, teenagers, and adult children who are no longer with them. Accompanying Scripture versus offer comfort.

Waiting with Gabriel by Amy Kuebelbeck. In this powerful memoir, Kuebelbeck shares the heartbreaking story of the brief life of her son, Gabriel, born with a rare heart defect. Told in intimate, artful prose, this story is not simply one of personal tragedy—it is one of deep parental love and of cherishing life.

A Catholic Guide to Caring for Your Aging Parent by Monica Dodds. While this book is geared toward caring for an ill parent, it has a wonderful prayer section that is helpful for anyone grieving the loss of a parent.

30 Days of Grief Prayers by Tom McGrath. It’s a small “Elf Help” book, and a very helpful grief resource.
